Lighting Science Group Corporation announced June 4 it released the outdoor Coastal Light. The company said the light is designed with amber-colored LEDs to deter sea turtle hatchlings and other wildlife sensitive to or threatened by light.

Light pollution standards are set in coastal areas, and properties are required by law to comply with them to protect wildlife. Lighting Science said almost 20,000 sea turtle hatchlings become disoriented every year by beachfront lighting, causing most of the newborns to not make it back into the ocean.

Because turtle eye receptors are more sensitive to different intensity and wavelengths of light than the human eye, amber-colored LEDs are the solution to bright and disruptive beach lights.

A variety of configurations and mountings are available for the Coastal Light including the traditional Roadmaster exterior fixture and the modern Prolific pole mount. Replacement lamps are also available, Lighting Science announced. Installations on the Florida coast have already revealed that the solutions is achieving its purpose.

"Sea turtles and other wildlife are endangered by traditional white lighting at homes and businesses in coastal regions," said Jeremy Cage, CEO of Lighting Science. "The Coastal Light from our Nature Collection offers flexibility in design and installation but it doesn't attract the turtles and prevents the unnecessary loss of wildlife."

Lighting Science unveils additional innovative lighting
Along with the Coastal Light, Lighting Science also unveiled a number of other innovative energy saving solutions at the 2013 International Parking Institute Conference and Expo in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., at the end of May.

Lighting Science released the NeoCor and C2D LED luminaires with PixelView Control at the event. The technology includes garage and canopy luminaires with integrated lighting control technology that offers a more than 60 percent reduction in operating costs. The PixelView Control occupancy sensing system provides individual luminaire management.

The Roadmaster streetlight was also unveiled at the expo and helps cities cut back on energy and maintenance costs compared to traditional high-pressure sodium streetlights. The final lighting technology released at the event was the Forefront Area and Wallpack. This innovative lighting technology maximizes the capabilities of the LED source. The luminaires are available in a number of sizes and performance optical distributions to produce high energy and maintenance savings.
